Private Entry: Located in the mountains surrounding Rio de Janeiro, Casa das Canoas was the third home Oscar Niemeyer designed for his own family. Completed in 1953, the structure shows how modern materials, specifically reinforced concrete, allowed Niemeyer to freely shape the home to fit the irregularities of the natural environment. Rather than removing a massive rock on the building site, Niemeyer incorporated it into the design. An oversized sinuous slab roof—the shape of which is echoed in the Saarinen table and chairs—creates several covered outdoor areas in which to enjoy in this tropical hideaway. Fjord, born in 2002, tells the story of regeneration, just like nature, which adapts and reinvents itself, becoming richer and more unique with its continuous evolution.

As the name suggests, there is a strong Scandinavian influence with references to Arne Jacobsen and the inlets of northern coastlines represented in the long cut-away.

This image at the Biennale, in the Scandinavian pavilion, is the perfect backdrop for the project.

A lush 18th-century villa mixes time and texture
A genius of the last century.

This lavishly appointed pied-à-terre in Turin, Italy is located in a two-story 18th century villa. Brimming with stylistic influences from all corners of the globe, the flat was designed by the eccentric mid-century designer Carlo Mollino as a tableau to his wordly pursuits. The Rococo interior is defined by its complex mix of color, pattern and texture, introduced through exotic skins, wooded wallpaper, taxidermy and colored kilims. As a man of many cultures, Mollino mixed them all together with glee.
