Everyday life on a pedestal: Eero Saarinen enjoying a meal with his wife Aline and son Eames in their Michigan home in 1959. Eero spent several years perfecting the design of his pedestal collection for Knoll, which began with a desire to eliminate the clutter created by furniture legs. By creating single-legged tables and chairs, Eero opened up the space around the dining table and brought elegance to the spaces in which we gather with friends and family.

Architect Vitor Almeida and his team at @esqvta approach each project with the idea of “interior tailoring,” where they introduce new elements without silencing the past. For this Lisbon apartment—which occupies an entire floor of what was once a grand hotel—they adapted a space originally designed for entertaining into one suited for family life by creating small, intimate areas. In the living room, Platner Armchairs and a Platner Side Table bring comfort and warmth to the seventeenth-century interior and intricately painted mural walls.
